Display caption Ruskin cautiously identified this watercolour as a view of the Allee Blanche, from the foot of the Glacier de Miage. He developed his thoughts in his 1857 catalogue, stating that this was a 'noble drawing , though not much like the place, which I only recognise by the peculiar outlines on the right hand. But its exquisite gradations of colour, and the perfect expression of the retiring ridge which leads up to the left-hand peak, make this one of the best mountain drawings in the series'.
