This pencil and watercolour composition is executed on white, wove, Whatman-type paper. The graphite pencil drawing was followed by the application of watercolour washes. The sky and water were painted after the land as the blue paint used for the sky overlaps the landscape in these areas. Details were added in red, brown and green pigments applied with a very fine brush.

This work has been light damaged. The edges of the sheet clearly indicate that in the past this image was mounted and displayed in bright light for a prolonged period of time. This damage is irreversible and has permanently altered the colour of the paper and may also have affected some of the pigments: there is a noticeable absence of red tones in the image.

Prior to conservation this image was adhered to a lining sheet, which has since been removed. A dark smudge is visible in the middle of the top edge of the recto. There is a small tear in middle of right-hand edge of the recto. The left-hand edge of the recto has been torn from a sketchbook; the small nicks along this edge indicate the points where the sheet was bound into the book.
