The buildings within this sketch are currently unidentified although they may depict part of a view of Terni, an Umbrian town approximately eighteen miles south of Spoleto, famous for the nearby Cascata or Caduta delle Marmore, also known as the Falls of Terni. The town was transformed into a major industrial centre during the second half of the nineteenth century. Furthermore, around eighty per cent of the town was destroyed by Allied bombing during the Second World War. 1 Consequently few of the buildings seen by Turner in 1819 still exist today. The view continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 57 verso ( D14764 ).

Turner has drawn a second sketch on this page, with the sketchbook held vertically as a notebook. This view depicts Papigno, a small village on a rocky outcrop en routebetween Terni and the Cascata delle Marmore. On the slopes of the hill above to the left is a ruined medieval castle, the Rocca Sant’Angelo. Turner has inscribed the sketch with the name of the river ‘Velino’, however, the river at this location would actually be the Nera. Further sketches of Papigno can be found on folios 49 verso–50 ( D14749 –50) and 52 verso ( D14755 ).
