This painting depicts in a loose, impressionistic style, the view from the artist’s garden in Hammersmith, West London, which ran down to the river Thames. As well as the scene’s location, its title makes reference to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, now widely considered to be mythical. Pasmore researched the history of art and his Thames paintings are like tributes to Turner, Whistler and, here, Seurat. That the composition is based on geometric principles is clear and anticipates the abstract paintings that Pasmore began to produce the following year.
