The ruins of the twelfth-century Cistercian abbey of Calder are reached by a footpath about half a mile from Calder Bridge, which Turner drew on folio 33 of the sketchbook ( D07575 ). Turner passed through Calder Bridge on his way south from Whitehaven and Egremont, as in the itinerary on folio 1 ( D07538 ). This sketch focuses on the remains of the tower; it appears to be looking from the north. Another view of the abbey is folio 32 ( D07573 ).
