P77049 was hand coloured in gouache by Cinda Sparling with whom Hodgkin has worked closely since their first collaboration in 1980. According to Richard Morphet, Hodgkin is able to `work through her in a strange combination of arm's length with complete control. For him this collaboration has become like having an additional medium at his disposal' (Tate Gallery exh. cat. 1985, p.14).
The artist first drew on the plate very swiftly with red lipstick and these marks were printed in black. The sheet was hand coloured by Sparling in a vivid orange gouache and the sweeping diagonal was added in red. The image and title of P77049 refer to a dreadful hangover.
