American Indian Theme IV is one of a series of six prints rooted in Lichtenstein’s appreciation of Native American art. They were partially stimulated by his experiences in Southampton, NY during the late 1970s when he and his wife Dorothy resided near a Shinnecock Indian reservation. Combining loose references to indigenous artefacts with a visual style inspired by contemporary printed material these prints combine two otherwise disparate facets of American culture.
