HARUKI MURAKAMI was born in Kyoto in 1949, where his parents both taught Japanese literature. Growing up in post-war Japan, Murakami was drawn to Western influence: Franz Kafka, Raymond Carver, Kurt Vonnegut, as well as the liberating rhythms of jazz music. The notion of writing a novel first came to Murakami at the age of 29, while watching a baseball game in Tokyo’s Jingu Stadium. He has since written many novels, as well as short stories and non-fiction, including the books Norwegian Wood, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Kafka on the Shore, 1Q84, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage and Absolutely on Music.

Murakami has run a marathon a year for over 20 years. he ran his personal best of 3:27 hours in the New York City Marathon in 1991.
