Hi, all! It's Echo again.😉And it's really good to see you again~
Today I d'like to write a short review about a new movie called "Crazy Rich Asians" which was produced by an American filmmaker Jon M. Chu.
When it comes to Hollywood’s most popular movies, the ones that come to mind are action or sci-fi blockbusters. But Crazy Rich Asians, a funny romance story which will come out in China on Nov 30, has become “one of the biggest cinema stories of the year”, Screen Daily website noted.
The movie, adapted from Singaporean-American author Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel of the same name, is a rare US movie with an all-Asian cast. “It’s a bold move to make something with Asians,” Broadly website noted.
Without a doubt, the film is full of Asian elements. Characters play mahjong and the wedding scene is strewn with red decorations. In fact, it could be said that Crazy Rich Asians reflects a new trend in Hollywood for multiculturalism. While Black Panther gave African Americans new on-screen role models, Crazy Rich Asians is doing the same for Asian Americans.
However, looking a little more closely at the film, it’s difficult not to feel that the Asian characters and Asian culture have been thoroughly “Hollywoodized”.
We see this in the treatment of the central characters: Chinese-American professor Rachel Chu, her rich Singaporean boyfriend Nick Young and his family. According to The Paper, these figures are types rooted in Disney fairy tales rather than after any real Asian models. Chu is a Cinderella type, while Young is reminiscent of the frog prince. Meanwhile, the villa and the luxurious parties in the movie owe more to the worlds of The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Still, it’s quite encouraging to see a movie about Asian people, even though Crazy Rich Asians doesn’t completely break with stereotypes of Asian people or is much interested in showing Asian culture on its own terms. It’s still a small step in the right direction.
If you are interested in the whole story, I really suggest you to watch this film soon!
