Damián Nueva is a Cuban bassist and double bassist based in Paris. Born in Havana within a family of musicians, he learned percussion when he was very young. He discovered bass at the age of 13 alongside the great Israel López "Cachaito" and entered the Alejandro García Caturla school, then continued his musical studies at the National Art School of Cuba. Along with his academic training, he developed his playing in various projects, including the Afro-Latin jazz orchestra of Oscar Valdés, a former member of the group Irakere. He also collaborated for 4 years with the ballet and flamenco company Litz Alfonso, performing on many prestigious stages such as the Chicago Theater on Broadway. In 2002, he created his project “Espiritual” with Regis Molina (saxophone), Harold Lopéz Nussa (piano), Ruy Adrián Lopéz Nussa (drums) and Mauricio Guitérrez (percussions), and participated in the Jazz Plaza festivals in Havana. With these experiences, he joined the Mezcla group formed and directed by guitarist Pablo Menéndez, then joined the project of Equis Alfonso, co-author of the soundtrack of the film Habana Blues. His career led him to collaborate with many artists such as Bobby Carcasses, Fito Paéz, Roberto Fonseca, Chuchito Valdés and Jesús Rubalcaba, among others… He then worked in Madrid with Alba Molina, Andreas Lutz, África Gallego, Victor Navarrete, Ogun Afrobeat or Beatriz Luengo, then moved to Paris in 2010. He draws his inspiration and influences not only from Afro-Cuban rhythms but also from jazz, funk and soul music, and plays with very eclectic projects.
