平川彰（1915—2002），日本爱知县人，著名佛教研究学者。毕业于东京大学文学部印度哲学梵文学科，专攻印度哲学与佛教学。后致力于原始佛教、阿毗达磨佛教、大乘佛教、戒律的研究。历任东京大学、早稻田大学、国际佛教学大学院等校教授，1993年成为日本最高学术机关—学士院会员。平川彰先生在1959年以《律藏的研究》一书获文学博士学位。他的其他主要著作包括《原始佛教的研究》《初期大乘佛教的研究》《大乘起信论》《印度、中国、日本佛教通史》《印度佛教史》等多种著述、译作和论文，有《平川彰著作集》（全17卷）行世。
