1974年生于西澳大利亚州的海港城市费利曼图,在该州首府铂斯的北部郊区长大。父亲是马来西亚华侨,母亲是澳大利亚人。从小,班里个子最小的他就是全校知名的画画高手,十几岁时即开始为科幻小说和恐怖故事绘制插图。1995年从西澳大利亚大学毕业,获得美术与英语语言文学双学位,后成为自由插画师,曾两次获得世界科幻协会颁发的雨果奖最佳美术奖,四度获得“世界奇幻奖最佳艺术家”称号。2011年,荣获由瑞典政府颁发的林德格伦儿童文学奖,改编自他同名绘本并由他导演的动画《失物招领》也获得第83届奥斯卡最佳动画短片奖。他常常把看似不合常理的幻想元素嫁接到日常生活的场景之中,画风温暖动人,充满超现实的梦幻色彩。现居墨尔本。
