This well-documented first-hand account, written with passionate concern,
about the struggle to ensure equal educational opportunities for all is a truly
inspiring read.
As China continues to grow and develop, there is no more important issue
than ensuring equal educational opportunity to all its citizenry. Project Hope,
organized by the Communist Youth League Central Committee and the China
Youth Development Foundation, was established in 1989. The foundation’s
purpose is to provide educational opportunities to children in socioeconomically disadvantaged rural China. At its twenty year anniversary in
2009, it had already raised 5.67 billion RMB in donations, aiding 3.46 million
students and had built 15,940 primary schools across the country. Project Hope is now one of the top charities in the world.
No one knows when the next great Chinese innovators, policy makers, or
artists will emerge, but at least now, thanks to Project Hope, we know they
could come from everywhere across the vast land of China.
