On the occasion of the Beijing installment of “Liu Xiaodong: Your Friends,” UCCA has released a bilingual exhibition catalogue that features reproductions of the oil paintings, watercolors, and paintings on photographs shown at both UCCA Beijing and the exhibition’s previous edition at UCCA Edge (Shanghai), along with excerpts from the artist’s diary and stills from a documentary film by director Yang Bo, which shares its titles with the exhibition. Together, these materials form a comprehensive record of how Liu explores time and space through his versatile, documentary-like practice.
The catalogue is divided into two sections: “Your Friends” presents the artist’s newest series, an emotional observation of his closest friends and relatives, while “The Anonymous Walker,” a curated selection of his previous works, is a snapshot of his travels around the world over the past decade and the paintings that grew out of these journeys. The publication also includes an essay by UCCA Director Philip Tinari discussing the new series, a text by anthropologist Xiang Biao exploring bodily imagery in Liu’s paintings, and a dialogue between exhibition curator Yan Fang and the artist about the curatorial threads behind the exhibition. The catalogue is designed by Studio Pianpian He & Max Harvey and published by Zhejiang Photographic Press.
