This handbook attempts to name a field of philosophy by gathering new work across different traditional fields of philosophy (metaethics, normative ethics, epistemology, action theory, philosophy of mind and moral psychology) belonging to what the editors suggest should be known as the philosophy of practical reason.

The Routledge Handbook of Practical Reason provides a history and overview of this exciting and distinctive field. Comprising over thirty chapters by a team of leading international contributors, the handbook tackles questions such as:

What is the nature of the reasons for which we act and what is the nature of the faculty of practical reason? What are normative reasons for action? What is practical irrationality and what are the requirements, permissions, and powers that explain what it is to be practically rational and irrational? What is the relationship between ethics and the philosophy of practical reason?

The volume aims to be accessible to students while presenting cutting-edge work in the philosophy of practical reason of interest to researchers.
