威廉·拉波夫教授，著名语言学家，社会语言学主要创始人。1927年出生，1964年于哥伦比亚大学获博士学位，导师为著名语言学家UrielWeinreich教授。1971年至今一直在宾州大学语言学系任。Language　Variation and Change期刊主编。获瑞典Uppsala大学、加拿大York大学、英国Edinburgh大学荣誉学位、美国语言学会萨丕尔教授称号，1996年本书第一卷获美国语言学会布龙菲尔德奖。

因其瞩目的成就，拉波夫教授1979年当选为美国国家艺术与科学院(National Academy of Arts and Sciences，NAAS)院士，1993年当选为美国国家科学院（National Academy of Sciences，NAAS）院士、1997年入选美国科学促进会（National Academy of Arts and Sciences，AAAS），1979年任美国语言学会（LSA）主席。
