Acting on a dinner-party tip from Mrs Algernon Smith, he feels convinced that he has hit on just the chap to cover a promising little war in the African Republic of Ishmaelia. 1903年，伊夫林•沃出生于英国汉普斯特德的一个文学世家，父亲是著名出版商和文学评论家。沃从小受家庭环境的影响，热爱文学。自1928年发表第一部长篇小说《衰落与瓦解》，一举成名后，他先后出版了20余部长篇小说，多部短篇小说集，以及不少游记。

1998年，著名的兰登书屋现代文库评选出“20世纪百部最佳英文小说”，沃有三部作品入选，包括《一抔尘土》（1934）、《独家新闻》（1938）、《故园风雨后》（1945）。

1952年至1961年间出版的“荣誉之剑”三部曲则被批评家普遍认为是沃小说艺术成就最高的作品。
