植株高20-40厘米。根状茎横走,根密生,密生鳞片;鳞片褐色,卵状披针形,长2.57 (1.4-3.8) 毫米,宽0.51 (0.2-1.0) 毫米,长宽比5.11 (4.76-5.45) ,顶端渐尖,边缘有疏锯齿。叶近二型,远生,草质或薄草质,光滑无毛;叶柄长5-35厘米,禾秆色;叶片椭圆形或卵状披针形,长15-25厘米,宽2-7厘米,顶端渐尖或钝圆,向基部急变狭,下延成狭翅,全缘或略呈微波状;侧脉斜展,略可见,小脉网状,在每对侧脉间有2行网眼,内藏小脉通常单一或1-2次分叉。孢子囊群线形,着生于网脉上,在每对侧脉间排列成一行,从中脉斜出,多数伸达叶边,无囊群盖。孢子极面观为椭圆形,赤道面观为肾形。大小为(27-37.5) 31.1 ×48.3 (40.5-54)微米。单裂缝,裂缝长度为孢子全长的1/3-1/2。周壁表面具球形颗粒和缺刻状刺。刺表面有颗粒状物。刺长2. 8微米。颗粒直径2-10微米。
产海南 (保亭、儋县、定安、临高、陵水、琼中) 、广西 (北流、防城、龙州、那坡、上思、瑶山) 和云南 (金平、西双版纳、盈江) 。生长在密林下溪边的潮湿岩石上。印度、印度尼西亚、马来西亚、锡金、泰国、越南也有分布。模式标本采自印度。
本种叶形变化很大。在线蕨属中,本种的孢子囊群类型最接近薄唇蕨属Leptochilus。但孢子囊群依然是分离的,只是孢子囊群斜展的角度很小,与薄唇蕨属满布于叶背的孢子囊群截然不同。因此,不同意Nooteboom (1997)的观点,根据孢子囊群的线蕨形和卤蕨形将线蕨属和薄唇蕨属分开。
