伯恩斯坦这部晚期的作品写作动机是为了展开《大溪地风暴》的后续情节，讽刺的是家庭中的混乱关系，并在作品完成后动用了70 余人规模的管弦乐团为之演奏。这张专辑作品的是重新配器后的版本，虽然只有 18 名乐手参与演奏，但其演奏完美还原了原作中的压抑与悲痛感。在舞台剧情节中，它描绘了一个因为过往纠葛而不断争吵
