Schneebett(SnowBed)isatwo-roomenvironmentthatconsistsofawaxbedcastinbronzeandkeptfrozenthroughanelaboraterefrigerationsystem;alargepaintingmadeoftarandfeathersdepictingasnow-coveredwoodedlandscape;treebranchesthatblocktheconnectingpassagebetweenthetworooms;apoem,writtendirectlyonthewall;andachair.Onviewforthefirsttimefrom17October2004-1January2005,itwasthefirstartexhibitioneverpresentedattheBerlinerPhilharmonie.TheinstallationwithinthePhilharmonieallowedconcertgoerstositforafewminutesinthesilenceoftheroomsorberattledbythecompressorsounds,beforelisteningtothemusicalperformanceattheconcerthall.Thispoint-counterpointrelationshipwiththemusicwas,perhaps,theconceptualheartofSchneebett.AsitmighthavebeenforthecomposerwhoinspiredMartínezCelaya,themusicexistsasamemorywithinSchneebett,amemorythatisthreatenedwithcancellationandre-considerationbyboththesilenceandtheanti-musicalmechanismofrefrigeration.ThetitleofthepieceistakenfromapoembyPaulCelanandisthefinaliterationofMartínezCelaya’sBeethovenCycle,athree-partreflectiononBeethoven’sdeath.Thefirstexhibition,whichwaspresentedinAspen,addressedtherealizationoftheimmanenceofdeathandthesecond,whichwasshowninParis,focusedonreconcilingachasminourlivedexperience,whatMartínezCelayacalled“thegapbetweentheselfandthepartoftheselfthatwaitsinthepastforourreturn”(Lecture,AmericanAcademyinBerlin,19October2004).SchneebettaddressesthefinalmomentsofBeethoven’slife,asthecomposerlaysinhisbedinVienna,farawayfromBonn,hischildhoodhomeandwithoutwhathisbiographerMaynardSolomoncalls,“thefantasiesanddelusionsofalifetime”whichhelaboredtostripawayduringhisterminalyears(Beethoven1998,359).Unabletoplaymusic,Beethoven’sartexistsonlyasamemoryforthecomposerandhasitsfinalpurpose(andultimatetest)asameanstofacedeath.Schneebettembodiesthequestion,whatcanbelearnedfromthedeathofanother?
