In1965,inhisstudioinWarsaw,Opalkabeganpaintingaprocessofcounting-fromonetoinfinity.Startinginthetopleft-handcornerofthecanvasandfinishinginthebottomright-handcorner,thetinynumbersarepaintedinhorizontalrows.Eachnewcanvas,whichtheartistcallsa'detail',takesupcountingwherethelastleftoff.Each'detail'isthesamesize(196x135cm),thedimensionofhisstudiodoorinWarsaw.Alldetailshavethesametitle,1965/1-00;theideadoesnotdatealthoughtheartisthaspledgedhislifetoitsexecution:'Allmyworkisasinglething,thedescriptionfromnumberonetoinfinity.Asinglething,asinglelife.'Overtheyearstherehavebeensomechangestotheritual.InOpalka'sfirstdetailshepaintedwhitenumbersontoablackbackground.In1968hechangedtoagreybackground'becauseitsnotasymboliccolour,noranemotionalone',andin1972hedecidedhewouldgraduallylightenthisgreybackgroundbyadding1percentmorewhitetothegroundwitheachpassingdetail.Heexpectstobepaintingvirtuallyinwhiteonwhitebythetimehereaches7777777,aboutadecadeawayatthecurrentrate:'Myobjectiveistogetuptothewhiteonwhiteandstillbealive.'In1968Opalkaintroducedataperecorder,speakingeachnumberintothemicrophoneashepaintsit,andhealsobeganphotographinghimselfstandingbeforethecanvasaftereachday'swork,aritualbookkeepingoftimepassing.Theprocessisendless,butmeasuredagainstitsgoal-infinity-itisasnaught:'theproblemisthatweare,andareaboutnottobe'.(MichaelLloyd&MichaelDesmondEuropeanandAmericanPaintingsandSculptures1870-1970intheAustralianNationalGallery1992p.356.)
